One in five Australians say they feel disconnected from others, according to research released by Mental Health Australia. With World Mental Health Day tomorrow, the theme of  “Together, We Thrive” celebrates the importance of connection.

Senior Psychologist at Eastern Therapy Hub, Vicki Nousias, supports face-to-face interactions as a way for people to grow, learn and expand their support groups, forming behaviours that are beneficial for emotional wellbeing.

''If you can get out there and just have a small conversation with your barista or have a chat at the supermarket, even walking past someone and exchanging a small greeting with a few questions,'' she said.

Nousias, was impressed by the data taken from the survey released earlier this month, pleasantly surprised by high rates of family support and the direction young people in Australia are heading.

The survey found that 85% have friends or family they can count on when they need support, while 15% don't believe they have the same care.

‘’Young people are more accepting of mental health and the challenges they may be experiencing and actually seeking out support,’’ said Nousias.
