End of semester marks a new chapter for Swinburne students
Reporter: Lucia Fisher. As the university semester comes to an end, many students are preparing to close one chapter of their lives and open another. For many, today marks the final day of their university studies, bringing a mixture of excitement, uncertainty and reflection about what comes next.
Graduating from Swinburne University of Technology, Sam Smith said finishing university was a bittersweet milestone. “I’m really proud of myself for having this massive achievement and coming to the end of this chapter. But I’m also kind of sad that I’m not going to be a student anymore.”
While some graduates are preparing to enter the workforce, others are considering travel, further study or taking time to decide on their next steps.
Swinburne enrolment specialist and university alumnus, Stephanie Antonopoulos, said having a plan could help students navigate the transition out of university. “I would definitely have an idea of what you want to do, whether it's taking some time off after study to travel.”
“Get some life experience or go straight into, you know, full time work as a graduate or whether it's a third option, just have an idea of what it is you want, and then plan those steps.”
Stephanie also encouraged graduating students to make use of university resources before losing access to their student accounts.
“Make the most of any access you have via Swinburne. So while you still have your student account, take up every free opportunity that’s offered to you, whether it’s visiting the Careers Launchpad or the Student Success Hub”.
For students finishing their final assessments, the end of semester represents more than just the conclusion of another academic year.
