Camberwell Market celebrates 50 years of Sundays

One of Melbourne’s longest-running markets celebrated a major milestone over the weekend, with the Camberwell Sunday Market marking 50 years of bargain hunting, vintage finds and iconic jam donuts.

The anniversary brought together the usual mix of much-loved stallholders and food vendors, alongside DJs and live performers throughout the market.

Opening in 1976, the Camberwell Sunday Market has become something of an institution for Melburnians. For generations, shoppers have spent their Sundays digging through racks of second-hand clothing, records, antiques, collectables and the occasional item you did not know you needed until you found it.

But 50 years on, the market is far from stuck in the past.

As vintage and second-hand fashion continue to find new audiences, particularly among younger shoppers, Camberwell has managed to stay surprisingly current. What was once simply considered buying second-hand has become part of a much bigger shift towards vintage fashion and sustainability.

Reaching 50 years is no small achievement, particularly at a time when the way people shop has changed dramatically. Through online shopping, fast fashion and changing trends, Camberwell Sunday Market has remained a constant.

If its 50th birthday celebrations were anything to go by, Melbourne is not done rummaging just yet.
