Machete ban in effect today

Victoria's official machete ban starts today, with bins located at 45 police stations across the CBD and regional Victoria.

The aim of the ban is to reduce violent offences.

But research from the Youth Endowment Fund in England has found weapons amnesty bins don’t really have an impact on violent crime. Knife surrender schemes in the UK contribute to a small reduction in weapon-related offences but the effects don’t last long.
